Ceramic tiles

  1. Ceramic tiles can be glazed or unglazed.

  4. Can have a decorative, patterned or coloured surface.

Porcelain tiles

  1. Made from porcelain to produce a harder wearing, durable tile.
  2. Porcelain tiles can be glazed or unglazed.
  3. Unglazed porcelain tiles should be sealed before and after grouting.
  4. Porcelain tiles are generally suitable for use inside and out but always check specific packs.
Glass
  1. Made from glass that has been cut, coloured and hand finished.
  2. Available in a huge range of colours, textures and sizes.
  3. Glass is very difficult to cut.
  4. Glass is only suitable for indoor use
  5. Generally come in strips or sheets of mosaic to mix 'n' match with other tiles.

Travertine

  1. These tiles are made from natural stone.
  2. No two tiles are ever the same.
  3. The range of colours available is limited.
  4. Available in two finishes, natural tumbled or polished.
  5. Tumbled travertine has an open sponge-like texture.
  6. Polished travertine is filled and buffed and has a more sleek appearance.
  7. Travertine can be used inside and out but check specific packs.
  8. Travertine tiles should be sealed before and after grouting.

Marble tiles

  1. Marble tiles need to be sealed before and after grouting.
  2. Tend to come polished with a high shine finish.
  3. No two tiles are ever the same.
  4. Can be used inside and out but check specific packs.

Metal tiles

  1. Available in metal, metallic and steel finishes.
  2. Generally used to add small areas of detail, colour or pattern.
  3. Generally come in strips or sheets of mosaic to mix 'n' match with other tiles.

Tile sizes

Tiles come in standard sizes. Common sizes for square wall tiles are 10, 15, 20 and 25 cm and for floor tiles 30, 30.5 and 40 cm square. Rectangular tiles are also available in a range of sizes as are sheet or mosaic tiles which feature many tiles bonded to flexible webbing. When buying tiles always check the pack coverage.
